The Western Fair is coming to London Ontario on September 10th 2010. While I didn’t bother to enter the photography contest, I will be getting out to take photograph of the fair. I used to spend time and energy thinking about going on my own, but that’s no longer as I’ve ventured out a number of times now. Some people go for the rides and games, I go to take pictures.
My own inspiration for wanting to take pictures at the fair came from Tanja-Tiziana and hall of fame photoblogger Marta. These are 2 photoblogs that I visited often – back in the day. I remember Tanja showing photographs from New York and Marta showing images from the CNE. I would say that I want to do that.
The fair would come and go.
If you want to get out and get some great photography at the Western Fair in 2010, I hope these photography tips will help you have some more confidence. Who knows, you may even be inspired to try some new things! I really want to see some amazing photographs come out of our London Ontario photography crew. It’s a week after PhotoCamp and I hope many photographers in the city will be amped to turn up their photography skills.
Not from London Ontario? That’s okay! These tips could be used for any type of local fair, county fair, or whatever it’s called in your area!
Photography Tip #1 – Show up a Few Hours Before Sunset
Depending on how much time you have to dedicate to the London Western Fair, I recommend going at least a few hours before sunset. I chose this photography tip first because I believe it can allow you to get amazing pictures leading up to sunset, during sunset, and after sunset. If you’ll only be able to make it out to the fair once, this will be your biggest bag for your buck (admission).
Because of the time I hung out at the Western Fair, I was able to get 3 totally different images of the exact same ride. The rides and games have interesting aspects that you can photograph all day and night. Take full advantage of the light as it changes. As the sun goes down, the fair lights come on.
Going only in the afternoon, you’ll probably want to get out of there before it gets dark for night photographs. Eating at the fair for a long period of time can become costly too. In a few hours you can catch the best of the best!

Don’t miss Bruce County, Ontario Fall Fairs are the place to be with crafts, kids rides, fresh food and lots of entertainment!
I have spent the better part of two hours tonight digging through your site, your blog, your photos. I don’t know what to say, except, thank you. I really am speechless and encouraged and inspired.
I linked to my Western Fair photos……it was my first fair-photography experience.
Hey Janine,
Wow Janine! Thanks for taking that time to check things out around here. I totally appreciate it and I can’t wait to see your Western Fair Photos! Do you go out to any of the London Photowalks at all?
Gee…nice of me to respond …. almost a year later! I went to one photowalk last summer (the Scott Kelby) but haven’t attended any others since. I make up my own mostly. :)
