Preparing to Start a Blog & Buy a Domain Name

If you’ve been considering starting a blog, you’re hopefully thinking about what your domain name will be as well. I am soon to launch my blog set up service for people that have had trouble taking action on pursuing their dreams.  In preparation for that, the point of this article is to provide some quick information that will help you spend your time wisely when considering your blog niche (your passion) and domain name.  Hopefully if you’re stuck right now, you’ll start brainstorming and be ready to take action when I launch my service.  I want to help 1000 people that don’t have the time and energy to learn how to set up a blog on their own domain and hosting.  My life has changed since deciding to work on my passions daily. I want to help you start as well!

I was thinking the other night about how we can now start a blog with ease, especially if you already have your hosting set up. You can seriously purchase another domain on your current hosting and install blog software in a little bit of time and start creating content.  Even quicker if you know someone that will install the blog software and set up the database for you.  This could suddenly become another branch of your business.

This is also true for your first blog thought too. You could be blogging in 24 hours. The important thing to remember thought is that even though you’re suddenly blogging, it doesn’t mean that you’re going to have millions of listeners right away. That’s okay because patience is a virtue and this is where your passion will carry your forward.

I am going to layout process that will help you figure out a domain name that will be the home of your blog.

The important thing about starting this process is that you’re looking to do something that relates to what you dream about doing with your life. You’re going to brainstorm what you’re interested in.  Surprisingly this process is tough for a lot of people.  I created a post before about passion vs the lottery ticket as a way to get people thinking in a different mindset.  If you won 50 million dollars in the Lottery or had it sitting in the bank, what would you decide to do with your time? I recommend giving it a quick read. As well, if you’re a photographer or an artist, you may have already figured out your passion, but wonder how to make money from it online? Well, start blogging and thrive online.

What are you interested in?

Write down what your interested in.  Don’t stop at 5 or 10 items, or any number at all.  Instead, try doing the exercise for 30 minutes.   The point is that you’ll start to uncover some deep interests after a while.  This is not to say that if the first thing you write down is “sleeping,” that it’s not important.  However, and this is something the GTD (get things done) types know, if you are clearing out your head on a regular basis, it opens up possibilities for amazing ideas to surface.

What Are You Good At?

Are you great at finding the next awesome video game? Do people rave over how great you are with children? Think about feedback that people give you. It could be something you remember someone telling you, or ask someone what comes to mind when they think of you?

If you wern’t in the room and a friend was talking about you, what would they probably be saying?

Write these down as well.

Combing Your Interests with Your Skills

Now, Try combining the 2 lists. For instance, if you’re awesome at finding the next big video game before everyone else, and you are very passionate about your video games.  Is there something of value that you can provide to other people, while being involved in your passion for video gaming?  Of course there is! Start playing with these ideas.   Draw lines that connect list one to list two.  If you’re amazing with children and love photography, could you merge the two? What can you share with the world that you’re awesome at?  We all have something killer to provide and you’re soon going to be able to share via a blog.

Domain Name Discovery

This can be pretty fun.  You’ve thought about your passions and what you could blog about.  You can now start thinking about what you want your domain name to be.   Some Key aspects to think about:

  •  .com is king
  • rememberable
  • possible use of your keyword in the domain name (your keyword might be your passion, ie. photography)
  • try to avoid hyphens if possible
  • don’t rush
  • don’t wait too long
  • you don’t have to follow the rules

Remember that your domain name could simply be your own name if it is not already taken, or some variation.  You don’t want the domain name to be too long though.  I registered my own name ”scottrwebb.com” – because “scottwebb.com” was already taken.  I could have, and may in the future, bought “scottwebbphoto.com” but I have the ability to use “scottrwebb.com” for anything I want in the future and I am not limited to photography.

Be creative.

Remember that you don’t have to stick to 1 blog, or 1 idea.  I have multiple blogs going and it’s fun to update them from time to time.  I have plans in motion for a few and using the mindset of “Slow and Steady.”  You start thinking globally because you have access to the globe.

I am going to be launching my service to set up a blog and wordpress theme for people soon.  I’ve been working on it for a while now and I still need a litttle bit of time.  I have set up a afffiliate program becaue I am using e-junkie for my e-commerce service. If you’re interested in spreading my message to help 1000 people take action by 2010, please join my affiliate army and become a part of this goal.  I feel blogging is the start of it all online.
